Obama drinks Flint water as he urges children to be tested for lead

Image
Showing support for the beleaguered residents of Flint, Michigan, President Barack Obama drank filtered city water on Wednesday to show that it is again safe following a lead-contamination crisis. WASHINGTON — Visiting a Michigan city where thousands of children were poisoned by lead in their drinking water, President Obama blamed the crisis in Flint on a mindset that "less government is the highest good," which he said has led to disinvestment in poor communities. In a speech to a restless audience at a high school gymnasium, Obama also urged parents of those children to get them tested — but also to have faith in their resilience and not to use the poisoned water as an excuse not to expect great things from them."That attitude is just as corrosive to democracy as that stuff that put lead in your water," he said. "It's not enough to fix the water. We need to fix the culture of neglect." Obama's visit to the eastern Michigan city of...

Iran threatens to block U.S. access to vital waterway

Image
TEHRAN, Iran -- The deputy commander of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard said Iranian forces will close the strategic Strait of Hormuz to the United States and its allies if they "threaten" the Islamic Republic, Iranian state media reported on Wednesday. The comments by Gen. Hossein Salami, carried on state television, follow a long history of both rhetoric and confrontation between Iran and the U.S. over the narrow strait , through which nearly a third of all oil traded by sea passes. The remarks by the acting commander of the Guard also follow those of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who on Monday criticized U.S. activities in the Persian Gulf . It's unclear whether that signals any new Iranian concern over the strait or possible confrontation with the U.S. following its nuclear deal with world powers.

Syria conflict: Kerry hopes to salvage truce as new raids hit Aleppo

Image
US Secretary of State John Kerry says envoys meeting in Geneva are getting closer to an understanding on salvaging the cessation of hostilities in Syria. He told reporters progress was being made on a plan to reduce the violence in the second city of Aleppo, which has threatened to sink the nine-week truce. But he accused the Syrian government of "blatantly violating" the agreement to halt hostilities and allow aid in. About 250 people have reportedly been killed in Aleppo in the past nine days. On Monday, fresh government air strikes and artillery attacks on rebel-held districts and suburbs of Aleppo left at least three dead, activists said. Mr Kerry, speaking after a morning of talks in Geneva, said the conflict in Syria was "in many ways out of control and deeply disturbing". He said the cessation of hostilities had had "a profoundly positive effect" and saved many lives, but in recent weeks it had been "put to the test". ...

(Cheryl Evans/The Arizona Republic via AP) </p> PHOENIX (AP) -- Texas Sen. Ted Cruz pulled out a strategic victory at Saturday's Arizona Republican Party convention, nailing down a large majority of delegates to the national convention amid cheating accusations from backers of businessman Donald Trump. The Cruz slate won virtually all of the 28 at-large national delegates and roughly split the 27 delegates selected by congressional district. Former Gov. Jan Brewer, losing her first election in 35 years, angrily yelled "I got cheated — I got cheated," as the results became known. But Cruz's Arizona campaign organizer says simple math led to the at-large victory. Cruz offered a nearly identical slate of candidates as John Kasich backers, and the combined votes led to a win.
